Born in Jin County of Anhui Province, Prof. Zha was a physicist and educator. In
his early years, Zha studied in the USA and received his Ph. D in Physics from the
University of Minnesoda in 1923. After his return, he had been a professor of South-East
University, Jinling University，Centre University of China and Wuhan University.
He had also been the dean of Physics Department and later the dean of Engineering
School in Wuhan University.

After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Zha Qian became the deputy-director
of the Wuhan University Committee and took his charge. In 1955，he was appointed
as the President of Huazhong Institute of Technology (the predecessor of HUST).

Zha Qian was the representative of the first, the second and the third National
People's Congress.
