Center for Computational Materials Science and Measurement Simulation

1.General Introduction to CCMS

CCMS (Center for Computational Materials Science and Measurement Simulation) of the Department of Electronic and Technology provides an ideal platform for team members to experiment with innovative ideas. It adopts a run-through mode that combines the major practice links of the curriculum including extracurricular activity, course project, specialty practice and graduation project. It is based on teamwork and centered on interaction.

Since its establishment in April, 2002, CCMS has been constantly funded by the “New Century Teaching Reform Key Project—the Building of

Computational Materials Science and New Material Design Interactive Visualization Center”. With the support of the University, the Department of Electronic and Technology as well as the Department Institute, CCMS is able to integrate with such specialty courses as “Micro-Electronic Instrument and IC Design” and “Computational Materials Science and Basic Material Design” etc. These courses are offered to undergraduate students and effectively combine theory and practice learning, and in-class learning and after-class learning. CCMS provides opportunities and space for innovative undergraduate students to use the laboratory, to experiment and practice. It makes use of its CCMS website (http://218.199.80.10:8888/), which paves the way for distributed teaching experiment and is taken as a major means of teaching renovation.

Up to now, the center has obtained donation of visual instruments from companies such as NI (National Instruments), ADI (Analog Devices Inc), Xilinx and Texas Instruments. It has mapped out several experiment and development projects and competition programs. By relying on CCMS center, a distributed detective teaching experiment system based on internet is established which realizes resources- sharing, real-time discussion and on-line experiment etc. Also based on CCMS, a new public course is offered to the undergraduates, namely, “Visual Instrument Technology and Lab VIEW Programming”. The course consists of three parts: visual instrument technology, basic Lab VIEW programming G language, and hardware programming experiment. For the academic year 03-04, students who chose the course came from a variety of related disciplines such as School of Mechanics, School of Energy, School of Material Science, School of Hydro-electricity and School of Electronics etc. A considerable proportion of the students finished their course design project in the center, which was taken as an innovative mode for conducting across-disciplinary practice.

The center is staffed by 1 professor, 2 tutoring lecturers, 8 students in doctor program and 14 students in master program. The center consists of DSP/FPGA development group, RF group and computational materials workshop, covering a total floor area of 400 square meters.

Since its establishment, CCMS center has explored and worked out a working pattern of its own features: It adopts a run-through mode that combines the major practice links of the curriculum including extracurricular activity, course project, specialty practice and graduation project; It is project driven and teamwork based; It encourages multi-channel interactions among teaching, teaching renovation, research and innovative talents cultivation.

In all, 107 students have participated in the various extracurricular technology innovation activities, specialty practice, and graduation project; 1814 students have finished their course project design by project-driven mode; 31 research papers have been accomplished; 5 papers are published; research reports (including graduation thesis 132) are handed in. Up to now, about 30 students from the center have been admitted into the best universities in China to study for a postgraduate program; 3 have been admitted in universities in USA, 1 in UK, 1 in Germany, 1 in Singapore, 1 in South Korea, 1 in Netherland.

2.The feature of CCMS center and the notion of talent cultivation

1) Cultivation of outstanding students and specialty -accomplished students

CCMS recruits a number of outstanding students and specialty-accomplished students every year from the freshman, sophomore and junior students, each of whom is assigned a tutor. The interest of each member will be developed and fostered. Besides, CCMS center actively creates opportunities for students to participate in academic conferences and exchanges both home and abroad. From 2002 to 2007, undergraduate students from the center have participated in the NIDAYs hosted by NI (National Instruments) in Shanghai and Beijing and have won various prizes from NI.

2) Run-through mode --extracurricular technology activity to specialty project to graduation project

Based on the Visual Instrumentation Sino-US Joint Laboratory – a joint effort of NI and HUST, CCMS offered an optional public course to the undergraduate students of the whole university-- Visual Instrument Technology and Lab VIEW Programming. Through the course, the centre has attracted a number of students with potential, enthusiasm and initiality and organized them into various extracurricular technology activity, specialty project design and graduation project design. During these extracurricular activities, students learn to do research under the guidance of their tutors. Students’ academic research ability, academic paper writing and critical thinking ability is trained and practiced. And the center and the tutors also try to provide a platform for the students to publish publicize and share their research fruits.

3) Teamwork-based mode for developing comprehensive ability

(CCMS center has advocated an innovative cultivation notion known as the 5P5I notion: Project & Interactive, Patent & Inventive,Paper & Impact,Proposal & Innovative,Prize & Integrated. The notion stresses on cultivating students’ teamwork spirit, innovative spirit and integrates theory teaching and practice.

3. Research fields

1) RF

RF hardware includes NI 5660, NI 5670 and PXI-1045 (18-groove PXI cabinet) and a RFID detection system has been established which comprises the following protocols: ISO/IEC14443、ISO/IEC 18000-3 type A、ISO/IEC 18000-3 type B. The system can realize multi-card one-time identification and has been applied in IC design center of the department.

The research and development of network analyzer is being carried out in the center. And the scalar quantity analyzer testing software of Shanghai Juxing Instrument Company is being used to develop vectorial analyzer to provide support for material design research carried out in the laboratory.

2) DSP

Including TI2 serial controller, TI6 serial audio and video processor and ADI Blackfin serial processor.

3) FPGA

Including Xilinx, Altera and FPGA of all models.

4) Visual Instrumentation

This field represents the strength of CCMS and joint research is carried out with National Instruments.

4. Faith and prospect

CCMS is in the lead of teaching reform by integrating teaching and academic research, theory and application. It has adopted a run-though mode, and is teamwork-based and interaction-centered. It attaches great importance to cultivating the comprehensive ability and research competence of undergraduate students. CCMS, a platform for combining theory teaching and practice, teaching and research, provides environment for fostering comprehensive and innovative talents.

(2) The Base aims to take in innovative, capable and independent-thinking talents. However, considering freshmen’s lack of expertise in biology, the test will focus on examining the testees for their abilities of innovative thinking, breaking through the mind set and solving problems through unorthodox approaches, rather than expertise. The test is not necessarily carried out in the traditional forms of written examinations and interviews. It is up to the test setters assigned by the Personnel Department to decide the specific form depending on the situation.

5. CCMS recruitment

1) Available to

Available to: all freshman, sophomore and junior students
Qualifications: certain hardware and software competence; interest, innovative ideas and interest in practice
Research Directions: SCM, DSP (TI, ADI), FPGA, RF and Computational Material Science

2) Means

Any time of the whole year. Students with interest are required to submit a copy of their references and interest of research to liveness@vip.qq.com. Interviews will be carried out by CCMS. Those who pass the interview become prep members and member qualification is granted if they pass an estimation which is carried out after three months of trial work.

3) Examination for qualification

Preliminary interview is conducted by grouping students into different fields of interest (DSP, SCM, FPGA etc.). Estimation in conducted by taking into consideration the performance in specific project and general competence.
