Ⅰ. Brief Introduction of the Team
The team takes the early cultivation of undergraduate students’ innovative ability
as the primary goal and lays equal emphasis on cultivating their noble moral sentiment,
excellent work style and solid professional skills.
The team aims at cultivating the students’ innovative ability and comprehensive
quality through "learning by doing" approach which is the long-term incubation of
talents among the lower-grade undergraduate students, taken the full responsibility
of the whole process by the students’ tutors, directed by the real research projects
for those who have spare energy to directly participate in the scientific research
activities of the subjects’ front edge or the real production practice. In the constant
exploration and practice, this team formed a guidance system with the combination
of Tutorial System, Monitorial system, and adviser system, established a progressive
training route and accumulated a unique culture of teamwork.
Besides, the team also has a good level-down leadership of the academic echelon,
implementing the strict and orderly cultivation system, introducing the advanced
project management norms, and creating the harmonious team atmosphere. And this
makes students rapidly grow up to be a successful person in the concurrent environment
of driving forces and pressure, the talents echelon of tutors bear the characteristics
of continuity and thus greatly increases the students’ employment rates by making
great efforts to meet the needs of the society.
In short, the team systematically proposed and practiced the training mode of innovative
talents which is talent-targeted, openly- guided, progressively-trained and competitively-managed.
It also practiced a kind of education concept in accordance with the higher education
rules and the social needs intending to build a solid bridge between the higher
education and the social needs, stepping on a Four-win road which is welcomed and
supported by the students, parents, universities and the society and setting a new
example of training the talented undergraduate students for Universities.
At present, the Dian Team has attained outstanding achievements in the field of
talents training, teaching innovation and school-enterprise cooperation. Accordingly
it is warmly welcomed by both the students and society and brings about a wide range
of influence.
The mode has gained strong support from Huazhong University of Science and Technology
and immense affirmation of the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of
China. It has ever been reported by People's Daily, China Education Daily, Science
and Technology Daily, China Central Television and etc. Professor Liu Yu has also
been invited by many colleges and universities to introduce their experiences. “The
National College Student Innovation Experiment Program” inspired by the Dian Team
has already been put into practice among the 60 “211” key universities of China.
“The Project-based Information major Education Experimental classes” (Seed Classes
for short) has become one the first 300 innovative experimental areas of talents
cultivation mode. Meanwhile, the Innovative Experimental area of Talents Cultivation
Mode in HUST, namely Qiming College announces its establishment and the Dian Team
becomes one of the first core teams entering the Qiming College.
Ⅱ. The Development Process
In March 2002, Professor Liu Yu from Telecommunication Department of HUST established
the Tutorial System-based Undergraduate Talent Incubator Station by recruiting five
undergraduate students and conducting scientific research projects from scratch
with them and witnessed their growth and innovation potential.
In June 2003, one of the teaching and research project of Hubei Province, the Tutorial
System-based Undergraduate Talent Incubator Station was authorized smoothly. Directed
by the scientific research projects, it absorbs the lower-grade science and engineering
undergraduate students and advocates the “learning by doing” mode through the way
of practice - theory - and practice. The team takes the early cultivation of undergraduate

In 2006, the Incubator Station entered a benign operation period. The Innovational
Activity Base for Undergraduate students of HUST gained the approval of opening
from the HUST Communist Youth League Committee. In November, the station adjusted
its organizational structure, and established the Project Quality Department, Training
Department and the Integrated Management Department. In December, the station obtained
11 projects that were funded by the first national innovative training program for
university students and then 300,000 Yuan for buying equipments from the Facility
Division of HUST, which were used to construct the talents incubation base.
In 2007, the team and Wuhan Jiaming Laser Limited Corporation jointly set up a Photoelectric
Technology United Laboratory and the Talents Incubation Base has been extended outside
the campus.
Ⅲ. Our Achievements
The team members have been awarded over ninety-two prizes and won the special awards
of the Tenth National "Challenge Cup" in 2007.
The team has applied for nine National Inventive Patents and National Defense Patents,
and three of them have already been authorized.
The team members have published more than sixty important scientific research papers.
The total number of the scientific research projects exceeds ninety and the total
gained funds exceed 4 million Yuan.
Up to now, there are 245 formal team members, among them more than 150 members have
been hatched out of the stations. The No. 022 member Wang Xiaoxin had an outstanding
performance at the National Challenge Cup and won the “Top Ten National Challenge
Students”. The No. 039 member Zou Peilin published many papers in the field of Quantum
Communication and she was known as a “password girl” who broke from cocoon into
a butterfly. The No. 045 member Du Huan was successfully recruited as the project
manager of Microsoft Asian Academy of Engineering. Besides this, many members have
been entrusted with responsibility shortly after they worked in the enterprises
and some of them started to act as the executive head of the state-level research
after only one year’s studying for their doctor degree in the famous University.
Even some research project cases of several hundred thousand Yuan have been completed
by the development team led by undergraduate student with 20 members. In addition,
many members who are studying abroad also show remarkable performances.
The talents training mode through learning by doing received strong support from
HUST and immense affirmation of the Ministry of Education of People’s Republic of
China. There are more than sixty reports about the Dian Team in the well-known media,
such as China Central Television, People's Daily, Guangming Daily, Science and Technology
Daily, China Youth Daily, and China Education Daily. Among these, the front-page
headline of China Education Daily on November 8, 2007 illustrates in great detail
the Dian Team’s innovative road of scientific research with the title of the Enjoy
the Release of Innovative Potential in the Practice. Professor Liu Yu was invited
by many domestic colleges and universities to introduce the experience. On June
20, 2007, she participated in the opening ceremony of the national college student
innovation experiment plan which was held in the Department of Higher Education
of the Ministry of Education of People’s Republic of China and delivered a speech
entitled The Brief introduction to the Dian team of HUST. The leader of the Department
of Higher Education pointed out that college student innovation experiment plan
has got very big enlightenments from Dian team practice.
Ⅳ. The Process of Recruitment of New Members
The enrollment of Dian team is conducted throughout the whole year with four large-scale recruitment activities, usually in the first month of each semester (for example, in March and October) or the middle of each semester (for example, in May and December).
