Goal

It is established to offer opportunities and places of practice for excellent students of HUST, which can further cultivate and improve their creative thinking and innovative skills. By providing a platform for students to put what they have learned into practice, we encourage freshmen and sophomores to participate in teachers’ research projects or to initiate whatever project they are interested in under the guidance of teachers, thus fostering their innovative capability and practical experience.

Development

since 2005, an annual chemical experiment contest of HUST has been held in September with the aim of promoting the quality of chemistry experiment teaching, expanding the influence of the practical teaching achievements, exploring new ideas and approaches to improve students’ chemical experimental skills and cultivating their rigorous research attitude, scientific research methods and careful thinking mode so as to inspire further their interests in chemistry experiments and finally improve their innovative capability and cooperative spirit.
Meanwhile, a sci-tech innovation foundation for undergraduates has been set up to encourage them to participate in innovative projects and improve their creative and practical skills in the hope of enhancing the education quality and comprehensive competitiveness of our school. Supervisors of these foundation projects are all the professors and qualified associate professors of this school, each of whom is allowed to guide only one student. Project teams are formed through two-way selection between supervisors and students, apply for funds in teams and conduct research activities under the guidance of the supervisors.
Through years of development, the innovation teams of this school have possessed a relatively complete management system and stable research fields. They have made remarkable achievements in clean energy resources, environmental analytical chemistry, chemical biology, functional polymer materials, environmental electrochemistry, green catalytic material and etc. In Hubei Provincial College Students’ Chemistry Experiment Skills Competition held in June 2006, the team of five members on behalf of our university ranked the third place among all professional teams and all the five members won the second or third prizes respectively. In the competition of the same type held in June 2008, three members of our team won the first, second and third prizes respectively. At the First Hubei Provincial College Students’ Chemistry Innovation Achievements Seminar held in June 2008, two members of our team won the first prize and another, the second. During last summer vacation, two team members were entitled to participate in the National College Students’ Energy Conservation & Emission Reduction Competition organized by the Ministry of Education. Over the past several years, eight articles written by the members of the innovation team have been published in domestic and international core journals, among which an undergraduate thesis won the first prize of Hubei Provincial Excellent Undergraduate Thesis Award.
In recent years, many students in the base are enrolled in prestigious universities abroad. This year alone has witnessed students being admitted by Yale University, University of California at Berkley, Columbia University, and University of Washington etc. respectively.
