The Language Teaching Center was established in 1993 to meet the demands on Chinese teaching and of the increasing number of international students. Since then, the Center has been actively involving in the training of International Students in China. During these years, the Center attracts ever-growing international students and the quality of teaching has been enhanced with rich resources and comprehensive teaching strength of HUST.

Approximately 1000 long-term international students have graduated here. Hundreds of international Doctors and Masters had been trained here. In the beginning, they could not speak Chinese and were unable to communicate with Chinese people. After training, they study with Chinese students together. Some of them even began teaching Chinese in their native land after returning. They add fames to their Chinese Alma in every corner around the world. Now hundreds of persons are studying Chinese here.

A group of qualified teaching staff are working in the Center. The dean of the Center is Prof. Dong Weiguang, a famous linguist. The teaching staff includes Dr. Luo Lin, Lecturer Ye Yanjie and Lecturer Xiao Wanping, very experienced Chinese teachers. And a group of enthusiastic teachers with master degree are teaching here. An effective teaching model has been formed in terms of teachers, the curricula, the teaching methods and the style of education. For instance, the Center not only offers Basic Chinese Studies, such as Chinese listening, Chinese speaking, reading and writing, but also Chinese introduction, Chinese culture, Chinese history, Chinese economy, calligraphy, Taijiquan (Chinese shadow boxing) and business Chinese, etc. The Short-Term Classes have “Chinese Language and Traditional Culture Classes” combining the language learning with the culture lectures and culture inspection. According to the international students’ demands, the Center asks native students to help them as tutors after class. The international students are very satisfied with the abundant contents taught by the qualified teachers with flexible teaching methods.
