The State Key Laboratory of Digital Manufacturing Equipment and Technology (DMET) was founded by the Ministry of Science and Technology in July 2006. Its predecessor was the Ministry of Education’s Key Laboratory of Intelligent Manufacturing Technology. The laboratory is affiliated with Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) and supported by the Ministry of Education.

In 2008, DMET participated in the Chinese State Key Lab (SKL)’s evaluation for the first time and achieved good rating. In 2009, DMET passed an appraisal by expert group organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology. In 2013, DMET was rated as “Excellent” in Chinese SKL’s evaluation. The director of the Academic Committee is Academician Zhong Jue from Zhongnan University. The director of the Expert Committee is Academician Xiong Youlun from HUST. The director of DMET is Academician Ding Han from HUST and the honorary director of DMET is Academician Li Peigen from HUST.

DMET is currently one of the most important laboratories in China working on applied and basic research, development and application of high-end equipment, high-level professional and technical personnel training and international academic cooperation and exchanges in the area of digital manufacturing. DMET aims to meet the nation’s great demand in manufacturing high-end equipment for transportation, energy and  information and it focuses on the basic theory and key technology research of digital manufacturing. The main research area of DMET includesbasic theory of digital manufacturing, advanced processing technology and methodology, key technology of digital manufacturing equipment and digital manufacturing systems. DMET has had a significant international impact on basic research of digital manufacturing and showed industrial advantage in high-end equipment manufacturing.

 

In recent years, DMET has accomplished a number of landmark research results in high-end CNC equipment and technology, high-performance electronic equipment and process, operation optimization of mixed flow manufacturing system and new principles of precision measurement and sensoring, thus making great contributions to the development of digital manufacturing technology and the research and development of high-end manufacturing equipment.

Since DMET was founded, it has nurtured many successful members. They include one academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, one academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, one Innovative Research Group of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), one Innovation Team of the Ministry of Education Changjiang Scholar, one expert recruited in the One-thousand Talents Program, two National Distinguished Young Scholars, four chair professors of Changjiang Scholar scheme, three experts listed in the New Century Talents Project, four "Youth Thousand Person Plan" experts, three Outstanding Youth Talents and seven New Century Excellent Talents of the Ministry of Education. Up to now DMET consists of a research team which includes five academicians, one expert recruited in the One-thousand Talents Program, four national Distinguished Young Scholars, seven Changjiang Scholars, four "Youth Thousand Person Plan" experts, one Young Outstanding Scholar, three Outstanding Youth Talents, fifteen New Century Excellent Talents, one Creative Research Group of the Natural Science Foundation of China(NSFC) and two Innovation Teams of the Ministry of Education.
