Hosted by Latin American Center of Confucius Institute, the first Latin American Confucius Chinese Character Calligraphy Contest ended till November. During the contest, Students from Confucius institutes and classrooms in Latin America and Caribbean showed active participation. Paulo Roberto Nolli Filho （Zhang Yunzhi）, a student from Confucius Institute at Universidade Federal De Minas Gerais in Brazil won the first place with his pen-and-ink calligraphic work, Snow—to the tune of Qin Yuan Chun, A poem by Mao Zedong （the founder of the People's Republic of China）.
Paulo has been studying Chinese in the institute for nearly six months. He adores Chinese language and culture, especially Chinese calligraphy and kung Fu because of his admiration for a Chinese idea which is “a man should be endowed with both civil and martial virtues”. Being informed with the contest in August this year, he was so excited and eager to show his passion for Chinese culture through calligraphy. Paulo said the he specially chose a famous poem created by Mao Zedong because he loved the great poem, appreciated “talents in both literature and military affairs” in the content and was also attracted by the temperament of the poet. After knowing the result of the contest, Paulo thanked teachers in Confucius institute for guiding and hoped to keep learning Chinese.
