School of Aerospace Engineering of HUST Launched Comprehensive Cooperation with Gatech

On August 8th to August 15th, Prof. Vigor Yang, chair of the Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering of the Georgia Institute of Technology (GaTech AE), member of the National Academy of Engineering of USA, together with Prof. Lakshmi N Sankar (associate chair for undergraduate programs) and Jechiel Jagoda (associate chair for graduate programs), paid a visit to the School of Aerospace Engineering of HUST (HUST AE). Both sides had a broad discussion on the bilateral cooperation and signed the HUST AE- GaTech AE education cooperation agreement.

On the meeting between the two schools, Prof. Yan Youwei from HUST AE introduced the establishment, progress and mission of HUST AE. He suggested that HUST AE was ready to learn from and carry out substantial international cooperation with Gatech in educational philosophy, curriculum system, talent training mode of Gatech so as to produce aerospace engineering elites with global visions according to international standards.

Prof. Li Renfu of HUST AE introduced the tentative content and implementation of the international cooperation between HUST AE and GaTech. Through friendly negotiations, it is agreed that the international cooperation will be carried out in five aspects including the “ 2+2” joint program for undergraduates, “3+2” program (one-year undergraduate exchange plus one-year graduate program), summer camps for undergraduates, faculty exchange and joint programs for doctoral students.

Prof. Vigor Yang indicated that both HUST and GaTech were strong at science and engineering and that HUST was an academically-strong university in China with pragmatic styles and great potential in the development of science and engineering subjects. He said GaTech had a plan for establishing a global cooperative federation in aerospace engineering at present and that HUST was their priority in China. He suggested that GaTech was ready to get involved in international cooperation with HUST in hope that substantial breakthrough will be achieved next year as GaTech embraces its centenary so as to better serve the responsibility shared by the two universities of rearing aerospace engineering elites with leadership for the community

President Ding Lieyun and Vice President Chen Jianguo met Prof. Vigor Yang and the rest. Dr. Ding extended his welcome and gratitude for GaTech’s support for HUST AE. He pointed out that the education cooperation between the two aerospace engineering schools in HUST and GaTech had profound implication and will be greatly supported. He hoped that the cooperation would be carried out to be a model in international education cooperation as well as setting an example of going global for relevant subjects and schools of HUST.
