Alumna Xu Jingyuan awarded George T. Mulholland Memorial Award for Excellence in Cryogenic Engineering by CSA

Oct 10, 2021

Recently, Xu Jingyuan, who graduated from the School of Energy and Power Engineering in 2013, was awarded George T. Mulholland Memorial Award for Excellence in Cryogenic Engineering by the Cryogenic Society of America (CSA). The awarding ceremony was held at the 23rd Cryogenic Engineering Conference and International Cryogenic Materials Conference (CEC-ICMC 2021).

George T. Mulholland Memorial Award for Excellence in Cryogenic Engineering was established by CSA to recognize significant achievements in particular areas of cryogenics. The winner is selected by the awards committee composed of CSA leading scientists. This award is made every two years and to only one person globally each time.

According to the results declared by the awards committee, this award isfor her outstanding contributions to the field of cryogenics. In particular, the field of sustainable cooling technology owes much to her significant developments and advances on thermoacoustic refrigerators, pulse tube cryocoolers, Stirling devices and other cooling devices, by making breakthroughs in cryocooler efficiency as well as developing novel original concepts. She is further recognized for her technical leadership in the design and optimization of cryogenics systems, research expertise for studies of next-generation clean cooling technologies, and ongoing efforts in other areas of cryogenics. She has also contributed to the broader cryogenic community.

Xu Jingyuan majored in refrigeration and cryogenic engineering at the School of Energy and Power Engineering of Huazhong University of Science and Technology and received her B.Eng. degree in 2013. In 2018, she received her Ph.D. degree from the Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences. She worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Cambridge in the same year and now, she is a research associate in the Imperial College London. In 2019, Dr. Xu was awarded the Carl von Linde IIR Young Researchers Award by the International Institute of Refrigeration. As the highest award given to young scholars in the field of refrigeration, this award is given every four years. Dr. Xu was also given the Gustav and Ingrid Klipping Award by International Cryogenic Engineering Committee in 2018. This award is given every two years, with only one honoree each time. Dr. Xu was once selected to participate in the 69th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting as one of the young delegates from Cambridge University. Meanwhile, as an alumna of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Dr. Xu always cares about her alma mater. She is now acting as an alumni mentor of Bachelor-Master-Doctorate Class 2001 in the School of Energy and Power Engineering and regularly guides the students on professional knowledge, career planning, and academic advising.
