The first Symposium on Biomedical Engineering and Science of Brain held between HUST and U of T

Dec 9, 2021

On December 2nd, the first HUST and University of Toronto (U of T) Symposium on Biomedical Engineering and Science of Brain was successfully held via video link. This seminar was co-sponsored by the relevant departments of the two universities.

Attendees from HUST included Professor Liu Jianfeng, the dean of School of Life Science and Technology, Professor Zhao Yuandi, the associate dean of School of Life Science and Technology, and Jiang Jing, deputy director of the Office of International Affairs (OIA), Peng Yumeng, manager of Division of American and Oceania Affairs, OIA. From U of T, present were Professor Ramin Farnood, the vice dean of research, Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering, as well as several relevant professors, graduate students and undergraduates.

Jiang Jing delivered an opening speech. She said that HUST’s collaboration with the University of Toronto, one of HUST’s most important partners in North America, has lasted for 20 years. In recent years, personnel and academic exchanges have become increasingly frequent. Jiang said that the seminar was the first in a series of HUST’s academic activities for the "2021 North American Academic Exchange Month". This aims at enhancing mutual trust and friendly academic exchanges between HUST scholars and their counterparts in North American institutions. She said that HUST will continue to work with the University of Toronto on joint training of students, education, research and technology transfer collaborations.

Speech by leaders of bilateral schools

Professor Liu Jianfeng gave a welcome speech on behalf of his School. He outlined the school’s achievements in international cooperation over recent years. And he expressed his hopes that the exchange of scientific findings in biomedical engineering and science of brain research be reinforced.

Professor Ramin Farnood delivered a speech on behalf of his faculty. He introduced the basic information of the faculty and the highlights of its disciplines’ development. He said that he looked forward to deeper academic exchanges and high-level scientific research cooperation in more sub-sectors.

Next, the collaborators of both sides, based on their respective research results, made cutting-edge reports on biomedical engineering and science of brain.

During the discussion session, the professors exchanged views on the future collaborative research interests, the work plan of the application of Sino-Canadian joint laboratory, etc. They also discussed in depth issues such as student exchange, co-supervision of postgraduates and undergraduate exchange during the epidemic.

HUST’s School of Life Sciences and Technology and the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Institute and the Low Carbon Renewable Materials Center (LCRMC) at the UoT are jointly undertaking key international (regional) cooperation projects of NSFC. Their collaborative project - "International Talent Training Project for First-class Construction of Biomedical Engineering Universities" - was funded by CSC. The project aims at training biomedical and brain science talents with global vision, interdisciplinary knowledge and who excel in theoretical innovation and practical operations.
