On the afternoon of December 23, the 2021 Academic Advances Award Ceremony & Academic Seminar of Huazhong University of Science of Technology (HUST) was held at Mingde Lecture Hall, Wutongyu Academic Exchange Center. President You Zheng, Vice President Zhang Xinliang, and Ding Han, Director of the Academic Committee, attended the conference. Zhang Xinliang hosted the conference.

Ding Han introduced the selection process of HUST's major academic advances in 2021, and announced the 10 award-winning academic achievements. You Zheng and Ding Han presented awards to the key researchers of the 10 academic advances.

In the academic exchange session, the 10 winners shared their experience in conducting innovative and cross-disciplinary research with focus on national strategies, academic frontiers and social needs. Their stories of innovation, inheritance and contribution aroused bursts of applause.

You Zheng made a concluding speech, noting that we should target the global science frontiers, serve the main economic battlefield, strive to fulfill the significant needs of the country and benefit people's lives and health, keep pace with the sci-tech development of the world. He gave instruction in HUST's scientific research from four perspectives: focusing on basic research and consolidating the foundation of research; focusing on key and core technologies, and finding right research focuses; focusing on discipline integration and fostering growth points of research; focusing on talent team building, and arousing talents' research enthusiasm. He encouraged us to uphold the innovation spirit, overcome difficulties and hardships.

Present at the ceremony were heads of administrative departments, academic departments and schools, heads of Tongji Hospital, Union Hospital and Liyuan Hospital affiliated to Tongji Medical College of HUST, the director of the Academic Committee, secretaries of academic committees of academic departments and schools, representatives of young teachers, as well as representatives of undergraduate and graduate students.

Hosted by the Academic Committee of HUST, under the principle of openness, fairness, impartiality and putting quality before quantity, the selection aims to promote HUST's original and pioneering academic achievements. Entries should pioneer or promote the development of corresponding disciplines or disciplinary education, or have major impact on the society. Upon review by academic committees of academic departments and schools, the Academic Committee of HUST and its disciplinary committees, the winning list was rolled out.
