On February 14th, 2022, the Ministry of Education published “Opinions on further promoting the construction of World-class Universities and Disciplines” and released the second round of the list of the first-class universities and disciplines. 9 disciplines from HUST are in the list: Mechanical Science and Engineering, Optical and Electronic Information, Materials Science and Engineering, Energy and Power Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Computer Science and Technology, Basic Medicine, Clinical Medicine, Public Health and Preventive Medicine.
The selection guidelines are based on the monitoring data and assessment of the first round list, as well as serving the national strategic needs as identified in the “China’s 14th five-year plan”. The Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Education, and National Development and Reform Commission finalized the list of 147 universities for support, a slight increase compared to the first round in 2016.
The layout of the selected disciplines is: 59 basic disciplines such as mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology, along with 180 engineering disciplines and 92 disciplines of philosophy and social science. Peking University and Tsinghua University have the autonomy to evaluate and confirm which of their own disciplines to qualify the project. For those universities and disciplines selected in the first round list, which are not up to the standard and lagging behind their peers, warnings are issued and will be re-evaluated in 2023. Those that have failed the evaluation again will be excluded from the support list.
