On the morning of April 30th, Professor Shing-Tung Yau, world-renowned mathematician, the first ethnic Chinese to win the Fields Medal and HUST honorary Professor, attended the 330th "Scientific Spirit and Practice" lecture, and delivered a report titled "The Present Situation and Future of Mathematics in China". Zhang Guangjun, Chair of the University Committee, presented a commemorative plaque to Prof. Yau as guest speaker. Zhang Yao, Vice Chair of the University Committee, also participated in the activity.
Zhang Guangjun extended a warm welcome to Prof. Yau on behalf of HUST. He said that Prof. Yau showed a strong sense of the scientific spirit, not only in his academic research, but also in his philosophy of life and education. Zhang Guangjun pointed out that the "Scientific Spirit and Practice" lecture had become an important carrier for the construction of HUST campus culture, and he hoped that this lecture would help teachers and students inherit the scientific spirit.
In his report, Prof. Yau illustrated the developmental sequence and future trend of mathematics in China. He pointed out that the next three years will be a crucial period for the rise of Chinese mathematics. While cultivating local talents, China needs to build a better academic environment to attract world-class scholars to work in the country. Prof. Yau also encouraged the younger generation to aspire to become world-class scholars, to explore and innovate, to strive for breakthroughs and to make greater contributions to the development of mathematics in China.
After the report, a Q&A session was met with an overwhelming response. More than 400 faculty and student representatives participated in the activity.
