Nobel laureate Erwin Neher appointed as honorary professor of HUST

On May 15, Erwin Neher, Nobel laureate in Physiology or Medicine and professor at the University of Göttingen, Germany, was appointed as an honorary professor of HUST at Wutongyu Academic Exchange Center. You Zheng, President of HUST, presented a letter of appointment to him. Yiqing Zhan, Vice President of HUST, attended the ceremony.



President You Zheng expressed his warm welcome to Professor Neher and spoke highly of Professor Neher’s academic achievements and reputation in the field of neuroscience and physiology. He also pointed out that HUST has a long history of cooperation with German organizations, having worked with more than 30 German universities and institutes in talent training and research. Since 1994, Professor Neher has been working closely with the School of Life Science and Technology of HUST, fruitful results. President You Zheng expects the two sides to further cooperate on innovative talent training and cutting-edge science and technology and to contribute to the development of biological physics.

Professor Neher highly commended HUST’s achievements and expressed his pleasure to be an honorary professor of the university. He briefly introduced his cooperation and ex


changes with HUST, sharing his experience of visiting HUST and being awarded an honorary doctoral degree by it. He said that the two sides had carried out in-depth exchanges and cooperation over the past three decades. He has witnessed the fast growth of China’s economy and the fruitful achievements of academic exchanges and cooperation between China and Germany. It is expected that the two sides will deepen innovative cooperation in academic exchanges, scientific research, talent training and other fields.



Liu Jianfeng, Dean of the School of Life Science and Technology, introduced Professor Neher’s academic achievements and his cooperation with the school, hoping that the two sides could continue to actively engage in international talent training and scientific research and create a new model of Sino-German cooperation in higher education.

Professor Neher is a German biophysicist who was awarded the Nobel laureate in Physiology or Medicine in 1991 for his discoveries concerning the function of single ion channels in cells, becoming one of the first persons to record the currents of single ion channels on a live cell.
