“Every word and handshaking on the international stage bridges different countries. On the negotiating table, we are not only working for interests, but also laying the foundation for peace and collaboration.” In the classroom of the 2nd Global Competence Talents Class of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), 50 students from different schools were attending a feast for knowledge.
Nowadays, the world is developing so rapidly that a bunch of professionals equipped with global competence are needed to participate in global governance. They are required to know national conditions well, to have global perspectives and proficiency in foreign languages, and to be familiar with international rules and negotiations.
Therefore, adapting to the national needs, under the guidance of “HUST Global Strategy 2030”, the project of Global Competence Talents Class was brought out by the Office of International Affairs, the Office of Student Affairs, the Committee of the Youth League and the School of Foreign Languages.
At the opening ceremony of the first Global Competence Talents Class in October 2023, President You Zheng said that holding the Global Competence Talents Class is an important strategy on cultivating talents with global competence who are able to deal with international incidents and lead global resolution.
With the hope of promoting high-quality work in the complex global environment and the responsibility of cultivating high-level global talents, the Class has held a series of lectures and practice activities.
Multi-subject spreads knowledge
With the combination of elective courses and required courses, the Class was designed around themes of English speeches, presentations and debates, cross-cultural communication and negotiation skills. Teachers of the School of Foreign Languages from home and aboard jointly arranged lectures and practice, creating a precise yet active atmosphere. “They have shown strong curiosity and high-level participation, which made the whole class full with sparkles of new inspiration.” Foreign teacher Booth highly praised the students while they also showed great interest in the courses. Liu Xuanzhu, a student from the School of Management, said, “These courses broadened my global horizons, and taught me key points of international negotiations, public speech and cross-cultural communication, from which I benefited a lot.”
What’s more, four lectures focusing on international organizations were held by the Office of International Affairs, making students feel the extensity and depth of the global stage. After each lecture, students would discuss with the speaker about their concerns, showing their desire for more communication.
Practice sharpens skills
From thematic presentations and case analysis to Model United Nations activities, every practice sharpens students’ skills.
With a well-designed schedule, teachers and students of the Class could also leave their footprints outside the campus. All kinds of bases for patriotic education became the classroom for students to better learn about China. Various international organizations and agencies helped students to better understand the world. Leading enterprises showed the importance of innovation to shoulder the future. Besides, some students also participated actively in international events in person, making constant breakthroughs.
Students actively praised the practice activities. Jiang Zhongyu, a master student from the School of Environmental Science and Engineering said, “Series of visits not only broaden my horizons, but also taught me how to conduct efficient communication across different cultural backgrounds.”
Students have satisfying growth
The growth of students is the best achievement the Class could make. As students of the first Global Competence Class finished their studies, great development of their overall abilities was apparently shown, with the news of their brilliant performance in various competitions spreading around. Moreover, graduates from the Class are now showcasing their respective strengths based on platforms the project provided.
Wang Zesong, a doctoral student in the first Global Competence Class, recollected, “In the class, I have met companions with the same interests and ambitions. It has been half a year since the conclusion of the first Class, and I’m glad to know my companions are creating more achievements in their fields, while I am also ready to start further journey of mine.”
The first Global Competence Class successfully concluded in June 2024, while the 2nd Class is still ongoing. As one of the vital bases for talent cultivation, the Class is not only the paradise of knowledge, but also the starting point of dreams. Every student from here will bridge China with the world and lead the trend of the new era.
