As winter recedes and spring breathes life into everything, three breathtaking plum blossom viewing spots emerge on the HUST campus. Join us as we explore these haunts to savor the romance and poetry of spring.
Youth Garden & West Seventh Dormitory—"Plum Blossoms Adorning the Ancient Ding – Friendship Garden"
In 2012, to celebrate the 60th anniversary of HUST, the School of Foreign Languages planted 60 plum trees, naming the area "Plum Blossoms Adorning the Ancient Ding – Friendship Garden". In subsequent years, the school continued this effort by adding 60 more trees in 2013 and 80 in 2014, bringing the total number of plum trees in the garden to 200 over the three-year period.
Brown tags hang on the uneven branches. Although some of the tags faded and become slightly blurry, one can still make out the adoption dates, the messages written on them, and the names of the adopters. Each plum tree here has its own story, embodying the deep sentiment of "everlasting friendship, as enduring as the evergreen trees".
Opposite the garden, there is also a plum forest quietly in bloom beside the Founding Monument of the University in the Youth Garden. The plum trees here form a delightful contrast with Yuan Lake. The reflection of the lake's ripples and the plum blossoms create a unique and charming scene.
The South Gate & South Building I Plaza —— "Plum Fragrance by the South Building"
In 1953, during the university's founding year, South Building I rose grandly at the foot of Yujia Mountain. Over the decades, plum trees were planted in front of the building, eventually forming a dense grove. Red and white blossoms contrast vividly with the brick walls, their delicate scent weaving through the air. Together, they create a magical balance between the enduring architecture and the living flora, standing as a silent testament to the gentle passage of time.
Huxi River Bank —— "Plum Shadows by the River, A walk in Poetry and Art"
In 2021, the Huxi River, known as the "Most Beautiful Campus River," underwent a complete transformation. Stretching 1.5 kilometers from north to south, it now features a dedicated riverside greenway. Starting at the Huxi Gate of HUST on Chuidi West Road in the north, a leisurely stroll along the river reveals picturesque campus scenery exclusive to its visitors.
Along the bank of Huxi River, over 40 red plum trees stand tall and proud, their branches laden with buds ready to burst into bloom, as if eagerly awaiting the caress of spring breeze. Faculty and students can access this plum grove via Yudai Bridge, the southeast entrance to the Huxi River Greenway, just a 100-meter walk from the entrance.
With the spring arriving and the fragrance of plum blossoms filling the air, HUST welcomes you back to a campus in full bloom. Each petal of the plum blossom is like a letter from spring, carrying blessings for every aspiring student.
