She loves traditional culture, explores the “niche” field of ancient Chinese paleography, dedicates herself to protecting the university’s precious ancient books, and promotes the brilliant Chinese traditional culture to the world.
For two consecutive years, she has ranked 1st in her major, received the highest undergraduate honor at HUST, and was named the university’s exemplary “Triple-A Student.”
She is the guardian safeguarding the treasures at HUST: the “treasure” girl, Pan Yuhui from School of Humanities.
With sincere devotion, bringing warmth to the “niche”
“We should have an everlasting heroic dream in the mundane life.” In her senior year of high school, during a recruitment presentation by HUST, Pan Yuhui developed a longing for the Chinese Language and Literature major. Later, she successfully joined the university’s Program of Strengthening Basic Academic Disciplines, and embarked on her journey of pursuing her dreams at the School of Humanities.
In the work of ancient book collation, she witnessed the rebirth of ancient texts after restoration. She participated in various on-campus and off-campus events, such as symposiums on literary forms and bamboo/silk manuscripts, and classical literature reading sessions. She also took part in the filming of the school’s promotional video for Han pictorial stone rubbings.
She seized every opportunity to approach and engage with the “niche and esoteric” field of ancient Chinese paleography. At the same time, she continuously explored new ways to inherit and promote the legacy of ancient Chinese scripts.
In her sophomore year, as an outstanding undergraduate student, Pan Yuhui joined Professor Luo Lin’s research team. Through her daily scientific research work, she transcribed a corpus of nearly 300,000 characters. Simultaneously, she actively participated in various innovation and entrepreneurship projects, and published related papers, contributing her part to the research in Chinese Language and Literature.
Bridging tradition and the world
President of the Students’ International Communication Association (SICA), Campus Ambassador for Campus France…During her university years, Pan Yuhui, in various roles, has dedicated herself to promoting the Chinese traditional culture she so deeply loves to a wider audience.
During the United Nations “Young Diplomats” summer camp, she actively participated in discussions. She teamed up with students from South Korea, Thailand, and Malawi to take part in the knowledge competition on HUST’s school history and Chinese culture. In the international student mentoring program, she provided assistance to foreign graduate students. Through her concrete actions, Pan Yuhui effectively shared the story of HUST and promoted the voice of China.
With Grade 10 proficiency in both piano and cello, she also served as the vice president of the university’s symphony orchestra, using music as a bridge to connect with both Chinese and international students through performances.
Exploring a Vibrant Youth with Grounded Efforts
“Hui, the collective name for grass.” Pan Yuhui has always embodied the spirit of humble grass, quietly dedicating herself and making contributions.
At the end of 2023, after receiving the National Scholarship, she chose to donate the entire amount to four families and eight students from Mayidui Village in Linxiang District, Lincang City, Yunnan Province, which is a partner assistance area of HUST.
“I hope to bring hope to the children in the mountainous areas, encouraging them to step out of the mountains, pursue their passions, and achieve their dreams,” said Pan Yuhui.
In addition to her regular studies, Pan Yuhui actively participates in student activities, serving as the part-time deputy secretary of the Youth League Committee at the School of Humanities, class president, and Youth League branch secretary. She has accumulated over 400 hours of volunteer service. With steadfast determination, she explores a vibrant youth, one step at a time.
