From July 12th to 15th 2021, the 10th International Workshop on Stochasticity in Fusion Plasmas (SFP) , hosted by the International Joint Research Laboratory of Magnetic Confinement Fusion and Plasma Physics (IFPP) of HUST School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, was held at the Wendao Hall, Wutongyu Academic Exchange Center.
Due to the ongoing pandemic, this year’s conference was held both online and offline. Faculty and students from HUST’s IFPP gathered offline to convene with international experts and scholars participating virtually from more than 10 institutions in Germany, Switzerland, Spain, the United States, Japan, among others.
This workshop marks the first of its kind ever held outside Germany. The event aims to bring together international researchers to exchange and summarize frontier theoretical and technical achievements related to three-dimensional (3D) physics; to deepen the understanding of various 3D effects in magnetically confined plasma; and to provide references for the design of future fusion devices.
Prof. Wang Lu from IFPP presided over the opening session. On behalf of HUST, Dr. Chen Jie, director of the Office of International Affairs, delivered the welcome speech, extending a sincere welcome and heartfelt thanks to the experts and scholars from home and abroad. Dr. Chen also gave a briefing on the general information of HUST, the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and the IFPP. Prof. Liang Yunfeng, the chairman of the conference, heralded the official start of the event by introducing the background and theme of the SFP workshop.

More than 30 plenary and oral presentations were delivered by domestic and international experts and scholars during the event. These presentations covered topics including: development of 3D MHD equilibrium and advanced magnetic configurations; magnetic fields/topology effects on MHD instability and turbulence transport; optimization of advanced divertor with 3D magnetic topology; plasma-wall interactions with 3D plasma boundaries. The participating experts and scholars conducted comprehensive demonstrations and in-depth exchanges over the themes.
Associate Researcher Wang Nengchao from the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering gave an invited presentation at the conference, focusing on HUST IFPP internationally acclaimed special achievements in theories and experimentation of magnetic confinement fusion 3D physics. An online poster exchange platform of the conference were also set up during the conference where the participants can leave comments and raise questions after viewing the posters, and the authors of the posters will offer responses. Three best posters were eventually selected and awarded. One of the authors is Mao Feiyue, a PhD student at HUST.

Prof. Liang Yunfeng, chairman of the conference, concluded that this international workshop has strengthened the communication and exchange between young scholars and world-leading experts in various ways, and will be beneficial for research in the field of stochasticity in fusion plasma and 3D physics research. Professor P. H. Diamond, winner of the Alfven Prize of the European Physical Society, and other international experts also commended on the successful organization of the online conference, saying that the experiments and theories conducted or mentioned in the workshop have bring forth new dynamism. This is of strong reference significance for the design of future fusion devices. Shen Chengshuo, a volunteer of the conference, expressed his privilege in the organization of this event, finding it rewarding - especially in terms of conference service know-how and how to conduct international academic exchanges.
