Two subjects of life science, named Biomedical Engineering and Biology, received the international assessment recently.

A total of 8 international experts in Biomedical Engineering and Biology makes up of the panal of Assessment. They are:

Prof. Robert D. Bent of University of Pennsylvania (also the academician of American Academy of Engineering and academician of American Medical College);

Prof. Dennis E. Discher of Department of Biological (Medical) Engineering;

President Patrick A. Curmi of University of Every,

Prof. Xi He of Harvard Medical School (also the professor of American Cancer Society & Boston Children's Hospital),

Prof. Ralf Jockers of France National Institute of Health and Medicine,

Prof Wang Xiaoqin of JOHNS HOPKINS University,

Prof. Peter Yingxiao Wang,

Prof. Taosheng Huang of University of California at San Diego,

Prof. Bernard W. of University of Michigan

Prof. Xianzhong Shawn Xu of Agranoff Collegiate.

On the afternoon of December 14th, the International Discipline Assessment Seminar was held in Qi Ming School. The meeting was chaired by Prof. Yang Xiangliang, the vice Dean of the School of Life Science and Technology. Prof. Chen Jianguo, the committee of the expert group and vice President of HUST attended.

Vice President Prof.Chen Jianguo extended a warm welcome to the experts, and he pointed out that recent years had witnessed the rapid development of the Life Science, which had made a significant contribution to the interdisciplinary study of Medicine and Engineering. And he believed that the professional assessment and guiding suggestions from experts would effectively promote to achieve faster and better progress in discipline.

The Dean Prof. Wang Ning made an overall report of the two disciplines from five aspects, including the overall situation of discipline, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, the research direction and the highlights, technical transformation and social services, and the prospect and future planning. He systematically introduced the development and achievements of the two disciplines, and pointed out that the interdisciplinary study was an important experience for the development of Life Science. The experts also discussed in detail, such as undergraduate teaching, international integration, the number of teachers and students, and the overall development plan on the new building. The teachers and students also raised questions and received full feedback.

On the morning of December 15th, a symposium was held on the hall of the East No.11 teaching building. At the symposium, the student representatives introduced their campus life, international exchanges, scientific research, social welfare and other aspects, and they exchanged in-depth views on the related details; teacher representatives also made views with the experts on their research direction, R&D progress and vocational planning.

In the afternoon, the expert group visited the teaching experiment center, scientific research sharing platform, laboratory, the Life Sciences Building ( which is under construction), and the National Nano Medicine and Engineering Technology Research Center, as well as the exhibition boards about the outstanding students. By the on-the-spot investigation, the experts got a further in-depth understanding on discipline development, teaching and scientific research, innovation activities and achievements transformation, social services and other aspects. After this visit, the experts held a closed seminar at the National Engineering Center.

On the morning of December 16th, the Assessment Committee made out the preliminary assessment report. Generally the final result of the assessment was outstanding, and in some respects, the two disciplines were exceptional. The College is clearly unique in that the life sciences programs grew out of an engineering program, which is only a few decades old. It is rare in the world that two first-level disciplines advance side by side with interdisciplinary integration. The expert group believed that Biology is the pillar of the university. The School of Life Sciences has shown exceptional performance in undergraduate education and their all-round qualities. In particular, it did an excellent job in the introduction of young talents. At the same time, there are still some problems to be solved, such as the small scale of faculty, and not attractive enough to the excellent graduate students. The expert group also put forward constructive comments on how to strengthen the cooperation between the school and its affiliated hospital, to attract more outstanding students to further study in our school, and to enhance direct communications between students and the school leaders, etc.
