Three professors of HUST speak at the UNHRC

The 52nd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council was held in Geneva, Switzerland from Feb 27th to Apr 4th. Professor Wang Xigen, President of the Institute for Human Rights Law of HUST and Dean of the School of Law, with Associate Professors Teng Rui and He Miao, attended the meeting on behalf of the China Society for Human Rights Studies and delivered speeches.



On March 17th, Wang Xigen addressed the meeting with the theme of “Improving global development environment for human rights protection”. He said that certain economic and social conditions are necessary for the realization of human rights and that balanced, inclusive, and sustainable development can consolidate the economic foundation and create good conditions for human rights. Associate Professor He Miao spoke on the issue of Covid-19 vaccines. She mentioned that China has always been making efforts to promote equal, accessible, timely and full coverage of Covid-19 vaccines, so that everyone can enjoy equal protection of the right to life and health. In addition, China has also actively helped other developing countries to achieve long-term capacity building.




On March 22nd, Wang delivered another speech on the topic of “The Human Rights Concept of the Chinese Nation Community”. He pointed out that it is a foundational principle of the International Bill of Human Rights to guarantee the equal enjoyment of human rights by different ethnic groups. Fully respecting and guaranteeing all ethnic groups enjoy human rights is a basic feature of the contemporary Chinese concept of human rights. He also shared China’s experience in ensuring equal human rights of different ethnic groups.

Teng Rui actively submitted three speeches on the meeting’s topic.


During the meeting, the three HUST professors also visited officers of the United Nations, experts from the University of Geneva, and representatives from related social organizations. They fully negotiated and reached a preliminary cooperation intention.




The Institute for Human Rights Law of HUST(HUST-IHRL) is a human rights law research platform. It aims to promote human rights research and implement strategies that follow the human rights development path with Chinese characteristics and strengthen legal protection for human rights. In 2020, it was approved as a national human rights education and training base.


Since 2007, Professor Wang Xigen has been invited by the UN to serve as a development rights consultant of the UN. And as the only Chinese expert, he participayed in a series of important events such as the drafting and modification of bills and laws related to human right. Up to now, the base representatives have attended the UNHRC for six consecutive times and delivered speeches at the conference. They continuously make the Chinese voice for human rights protection heard on the international stage, and make contributions on behalf of HUST to promoting the development of human rights law disciplines and better serving China's and international human rights cause.
