The 9th East Lake Forum on Global Governance, themed by “Mutual Learning among Civilizations and Global Governance”, was held at HUST from November 18th to 19th.
President You Zheng of HUST, Director Xu Qingsen from Department of Social Sciences, Ministry of Education, Director Jin Xin from the Research Office, International Department, Central Committee of CPC, Executive Vice Chairman Liu Aiguo from Hubei Federation of Social Science Associations, and Dean Ouyang Kang from the Institute State Governance, HUST, attended the opening ceremony. Vice President Xu Xiaodong of HUST presided over the opening ceremony.
President You extended a warm welcome to all the participants. He pointed out that HUST attached great importance to building think tanks that can provide policy references. He also wished for further discussions on popular topics concerning civilizations and global governance.
Xu Qingsen stated that China plays a prominent role in initiating and providing innovative governance solutions for mutual learning among civilizations. This forum is in line with China’s efforts to create a global community of shared future and implement the Global Civilization Initiative.
Jin Xin emphasized that the Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, and Global Civilization Initiative are the three pillars of the community of a shared future. These initiatives, as important global public goods, demonstrate China’s dedication as a responsible leading nation. It is crucial for the scholars present to take on the significant responsibility of advancing these initiatives and working together to discuss plans for implementing them.
Liu Aiguo indicated that social science workers in Hubei province should continuously enhance international academic exchanges and promote mutual learning among civilizations. He encouraged them to conduct in-depth systematic and theoretical research, develop insightful policy recommendations, and ultimately contribute to speeding up China’s modernization efforts.
Ouyang Kang highlighted that themain focus of the conference holds significance not only for China, but for the world, as China’s journey towards modernization is closely linked with the process of globalization. In addition, he announced that the preparatory work for the “International Institute/Union for Epistemological Research” led by HUST has officially started at the opening ceremony.
The conference consists of three keynote speech sessions and a youth forum, where 42 renowned experts and 17 young scholars from 11 countries delivered speeches with grace.
On the 18th, the “Keynote Speech Session Ⅰ” witnessed nine experts discussing topics such as analysis of key concepts in civilization, the development of national governance theory, the dialectical relationship between mutual learning among civilizations and global governance, and the significance of carbon pricing and mutual learning among regional civilizations. In the afternoon’s “Keynote Speech Session II”, 14 scholars delved into topics like the impact of civilizational differences, China’s role in global governance, and practical examples of mutual learning among civilizations.
The “Keynote Speech Session III” featured 13 experts discussing topics related to meta-questions in epistemology from the perspective of social epistemology, mutual learning among civilizations, social governance, digital intelligence, climate and environmental issues.
