On December 6th, Karen Shire, Vice President of the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE), Prof. Lu Mengji from the Institute for Virology, and Prof. Axel Lorke from the Faculty of Physics visited HUST. Chen Jianguo, Vice President of HUST met with the delegation.

Chen Jianguo extended a warm welcome to the UDE delegation. He mentioned that since the signing of the first cooperation agreement in 1980, both sides have continued to engage in exchange programs such as clinical internships, summer courses, and Chinese language studies. The collaborative work on the Laboratory of Infection and Immunity has also been highly productive. He hoped to continue and expand cooperation into more disciplines in the future.

Karen Shire pointed out that Duisburg and Wuhan are sister cities and have witnessed the growth of student exchange programs. She hoped to leverage the unique strengths of the Institute of East Asian Studies to enhance collaboration between the two universities.

Karen Shire also provided an overview of the history of development, current situation, and research collaboration of UDE. Wang Haikun, Manager of the Division for Medical Exchange and Collaboration of the Office of International Affairs, reviewed cooperation history and envisioned future plans. Yan Wei, Director of the International Admission and Cooperation Office of the School of International Education, introduced the student exchange programs between the two universities.

Both sides then renewed the Memorandum of Understanding and Student Exchange Agreements.

Prof. Axel Lorke gave an academic lecture titled “How to watch a single electron do a quantum jump” at the Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics. Subsequently, the UDE delegation visited the Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, engaging in in-depth discussions on topics including student and research fellow exchanges, proton center development, and the hosting of academic conferences.
