In the 2024 Australian Open women's singles final, Zheng Qinwen, an undergraduate student majoring in athletic training in the class of 2023 at HUST, won her first Grand Slam singles runner-up. 21-year-old Zheng Qinwen also became the second Chinese player to make it to the final of the Australian Open women's singles after Li Na, a HUST alumna who won the title at Australian Open 2014. Zheng will reach a new career-best of seventh in the world rankings. Up to now, the two Chinese tennis players ranked in the top ten globally are both from HUST!
HUST immediately sent a congratulatory letter to Zheng Qinwen, extending warm wishes on behalf of the faculty and students. The Australian Alumni Association of HUST also put together a support team to rally behind Zheng Qinwen at the event.
