On September 14th, Richard Penty, Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng) and Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, led a delegation to HUST. They attended the HUST - Cambridge Joint Forum on Photonics & 2024 International Conference on the Cooperation and Integration of Industry, Education, Research and Application. During their visit, President You Zheng met with the delegation to discuss cooperation between the two universities.
You Zheng extended a warm welcome to the delegation. He pointed out that as a top institution, the University of Cambridge has taken the lead in basic research. Meanwhile, situated in Optics Valley, HUST tops the global rankings in the field of optoelectronics. You expressed his hope that both institutions could leverage their strengths to forge a stronger partnership in the future. This would include joint efforts in talent training, research and technology transfer. He also proposed launching more cooperative projects based at the Junshan International Campus to usher in a new chapter in their partnership.
Richard Penty expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome. He briefly reviewed the history of cooperation between the two universities and highlighted Cambridge’s unique strengths in fundamental research and technology transfer. Penty expressed his hope that the forum would act as a catalyst for further collaboration in optoelectronics and strengthen the partnership between the two institutions.

The Forum featured 14 presentations, where leading scholars and distinguished alumni from both institutions discussed the latest accomplishments and future trends in optical communication and optoelectronic technologies. The forum was chaired by Tang Ming, Vice Dean of the School of Optical and Electronic Information.
Since the Ministry of Education launched the International Conference on the Cooperation and Integration of Industry, Education, Research and Application in 2018, HUST has successfully held related forums for several consecutive years. Over 500 scholars participated in forum discussions, helping to deepen collaboration with Cambridge and bolster HUST’s global influence.
