On October 13, HUST undergraduate Zheng Qinwen from the School of Physical Education earned the runner-up in the women’s singles final at 2024 Wuhan Open. She, following alumna Li Na, is the second Chinese tennis player to reach a WTA1000 event final.
In the final, Zheng faced off against the defending champion, Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka. Zheng lost the first set 3-6. In the second set, Zheng broke her opponent late to win 7-5, leveling the match at 1-1. This was Zheng’s first set win against Sabalenka. In the decisive third set, Zheng fell 3-6, losing the match 1-2 and settling for the runner-up title.
HUST faculty and students gathered in the Optics Valley International Tennis Center to watch and witness Zheng Qinwen’s glorious moment. Present at the quarterfinal was HUST Vice President Feng Dan, who gave support and cheer to Zheng.
