HUST VP leads delegation to visit Hong Kong, Macao SARs

Vice President Zhang Yonghui from Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) joined the Hubei science and education delegation on a visit to Hong Kong from April 27 to 28, where they engaged with the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), and the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

 

 

 

During the visit, they held discussions on collaboration, and signed various agreements. Zhang Yonghui led HUST's delegation to Macao on April 29, visiting the University of Macau (UM) and the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao Special Administrative Region to deepen cooperation in talent cultivation and scientific research.

 


 

The delegation visited PolyU and met with its President Teng Jin-guang and Vice President Cao Jiannong. HUST signed an inter-institutional cooperation framework agreement with PolyU in the presence of Hubei Governor Li Dianxun and PolyU President Teng Jin-guang.

 

 

The Hubei science and education delegation held in-depth discussions with Cao Jiannong, focusing on fostering the cultivation of high-level talent, co-developing research platforms, and building an alliance for the transformation of international higher education. During the meeting, they witnessed the signing of a tripartite strategic cooperation framework agreement in the low-altitude economy sector among HUST's School of Architecture and Urban Planning, PolyU’s Faculty of Construction and Environment, and the Shenzhen Aviation Association.

 

Dai Wei, Deputy Director of the Department of Education of Hubei Province, provided an overview of the province’s higher education resources, and proposed initiatives for collaboration between Hubei and Hong Kong. Cao Jiannong expressed hopes of strengthening talent development and technological cooperation, particularly in areas such as AI education transformation and digital education. Zhang Yonghui called for deeper collaboration between the two universities in cultivating innovative talent, advancing high-level scientific research, and integrating research, academia and industry.

 

 

The delegation visited HKUST and met with its Provost Guo Yike, along with deans and professors from HKUST's School of Engineering and School of Humanities and Social Science. Discussions centered on the establishment of a global alliance of science and technology universities, and the development of research platforms between HKUST and HUST. At the meeting, Shi Xuanhua, Vice Dean of HUST's School of Computer Science and Technology, and Li Bo, Director of HKUST's Big Data Institute, signed a Memorandum of Understanding on research collaboration for intelligent computing systems. Xia Song, Director of the Department of Science and Technology of Hubei Province, proposed expanding collaborative efforts in AI and other fields, strengthening the co-construction of platforms, and fostering integration between HKUST's innovation and entrepreneurship resources and the National Technology Transfer Center in Central China.

 

Dai Wei expressed hopes of breaking new ground in educational programs between Hubei and Hong Kong, creating high-level forums to promote bilateral exchange, and broadening opportunities for student and faculty interaction. Guo Yike suggested utilizing the academic strengths of both universities to establish collaborative platforms, and build a distinctive Hubei-Hong Kong partnership brand. Zhang Yonghui expressed hope for HKUST and HUST to work together in advancing the global alliance of science and technology universities, co-establishing research platforms in areas such as AI, low-altitude economy, and medical-engineering interdisciplinary development, and tackling critical technological challenges together.

 

 

At CUHK, Zhang Yonghui engaged in discussions with university Vice President Jiang Li-wen on strengthening research and talent development in the field of medicine, calling for deeper collaboration on the cultivation of high-level talent in medical sciences.

 



 

At the UM, Zhang Yonghui met with UM’s Vice Rector Mok Kai-meng, who provided an overview of the basic construction of the UM's Hengqin campus. Both parties reached a consensus on collaborating in research fields, and establishing a structured platform for academic exchange.

 

Zhang Yonghui and his delegation visited the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong S.A.R, meeting with Wang Weiming, Director of the Department of Education and Technology, and also visited the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macau S.A.R, where they met with Li Xuefei, Director of the Department of Education and Youth Affairs.

 

Representatives from the Office of International Affairs (Office of Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan affairs), the Research Development Office, the School of Architecture and Urban Planning, the School of Computer Science and Technology, and the School of Pharmacy participated in activities.
