HUST establishes China’s first OPC AI Open-Source Ecosystem Incubation Center

Jun 3, 2026

China's first OPC (One Person Company) AI Open-Source Ecosystem Incubation Center was unveiled at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) on June 2.

AI is now permeating various industries, while the open-source ecosystem has become a vital foundation for technological innovation and talent cultivation. The newly established OPC AI Open-Source Ecosystem Incubation Center is the first in China dedicated to supporting AI open-source projects and focusing on OPC building. It aims to foster collaboration among universities, governments, enterprises, foundations, and open-source communities, while providing comprehensive support for individual developers, small teams, and university innovation groups in areas such as talent development, project incubation, and resource integration.

The center was initiated by HUST, the government of Hongshan district in Wuhan, the Chance Foundation, and Datawhale (an AI open-source learning community), with participation from the School of Software Engineering, the School of Cyber Science and Engineering, the School of Artificial Intelligence and Automation, and Qiming College. It aims to support the entire lifecycle of AI open-source projects and provide systematic services, including project diagnosis, community management, technical guidance, product development support, commercialization mentoring, brand promotion, and ecosystem collaboration, with a focus on nurturing open-source entities capable of sustained innovation.

At the inauguration ceremony, the Chance Foundation and HUST announced a 200,000 yuan ($27,000) open-source incentive program to support university open-source projects, student developers, and promising projects. The first OPC capability challenge (Wuhan stop) also kicked off, pioneering a comprehensive framework for nurturing open-source projects through a cycle of competition selection, capability certification, and project incubation. ORCA Co announced the establishment of a dedicated open-source fund for embodied intelligence to promote its integration and development within the open-source ecosystem.

The conference centered on key topics such as how AI open-source projects can evolve into OPCs, how individual developers can cultivate sustainable innovation skills in the AI era, and how governments, universities, enterprises, communities, and foundations can collaboratively support the incubation of AI open-source projects. By bringing together diverse perspectives, the event aimed to explore new pathways for building an open innovation ecosystem in the AI era.
