Albert Y. Zomaya, Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and Peter Nicol Russell Chair Professor at the School of Computer Science of the University of Sydney, visited Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) on Dec 17, where he was received by Vice President Zhang Yonghui, and presented with a renewed appointment certificate as an Advisory Professor.

Zhang Yonghui welcomed Professor Zomaya and thanked him for his long-term, pragmatic cooperation with HUST’s School of Computer Science and Technology and Tongji Hospital of Tongji Medical College of HUST. He noted that Professor Zomaya’s research directions closely align with HUST’s strategic focus on artificial intelligence, big data, and smart healthcare. Their collaboration has delivered significant results in scientific research and talent development, advancing the interdisciplinary development of artificial intelligence and healthcare.

Zhang expressed hope that the renewed appointment will serve as a new starting point to deepen cooperation in frontier areas such as intelligent medical systems, big data processing, and deep learning applications, while promoting closer integration of industry, academia, and research.

Liao Xiaofei, Dean of the School of Computer Science and Technology, reviewed the two sides’ cooperation history, saying that Professor Zomaya’s team and HUST have jointly undertaken multiple international research projects in medical intelligent computing.

To date, the two sides have co-authored more than 20 papers in international journals and at conferences, and trained nearly 30 advanced graduate students. He added that the school looks forward to Professor Zomaya’s continued guidance in discipline development, scientific research, and talent training.

Professor Zomaya expressed his gratitude to HUST and reflected on nearly two decades of close cooperation and friendship with Chinese universities. He noted that HUST has become an essential base for his research in medical artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Honored to be reappointed as an Advisory Professor, he looks forward to further expanding the collaborative ecosystem with HUST’s affiliated hospitals and continuing to serve as a bridge to help cultivate the next generation of computer science talent with a global perspective.

Professor Zomaya has conducted research in parallel and distributed computing, networks, machine learning, and complex systems for more than 30 years, and has served as editor-in-chief of several leading international journals.
