The latest Essential Science Indicators (ESI) data on May 14 reveal that Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST)'s Social Sciences, General has entered the global top 0.1 percent for the first time.

HUST, ranking 244th globally, is among the 2,476 institutions in the global top 1 percent and 247 institutions in the global top 0.1 percent for Social Sciences, General in the ESI rankings. Ten universities in the Chinese mainland have their Social Sciences, General ranked in the global top 0.1 percent. HUST ranks 54th among global institutions and 32nd among global universities in the overall ESI rankings.

HUST currently has a total of 11 disciplines ranked in the global top 0.1 percent in ESI rankings. These disciplines are engineering, materials science, computer science, clinical medicine, chemistry, pharmacology and toxicology, biology and biochemistry, physics, environmental science and ecology, molecular biology and genetics, and social sciences general. Engineering and materials science are also ranked in the global top 0.01 percent.

In the 1970s and 1980s, HUST's social sciences-related disciplines took their first steps amid considerable challenges. These disciplines have grown through the collaborative efforts of over 10 schools and departments, spanning fields such as economics, management, public administration, sociology, healthcare, architecture and urban planning, and AI. The historic breakthrough in the Social Sciences, General demonstrates HUST’s achievements in breaking down disciplinary barriers and fostering interdisciplinary integration. It marks the establishment of a unique path forward for social sciences development rooted in HUST's strong background in science, engineering, and medicine.
