HUST hosts Zuiwan Pavilion graduation-themed arts gala

Jun 8, 2026

Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) held the 26th Zuiwan Pavilion traditional arts gala on June 7, coinciding with the graduation celebration. First launched in 1994, this campus cultural event has a history spanning 32 years.

The event featured hands-on folk craft activities such as sachet making, lacquer fan painting, bead weaving, and balm crafting. A variety of themed cultural creative products were also on display.

The main performance took place in the evening at the Zuiwan Pavilion, located in the heart of the campus lake. The show was divided into four chapters and featured a variety of traditional art forms, including opera, poetry recitation and singing, folk instrumental music, and classical dance.

The China Peking Opera Theater of Hubei Province performed the classic opera The Legend of the White Snake: The Lake Visit, while students from HUST's School of Arts presented programs featuring classical dance and ethnic vocals. Li Tao, an alumnus enrolled in 2005, took the stage to perform a piece on the dongxiao (a Chinese vertical bamboo flute). The event also showcased performances on traditional instruments such as the morin khuur (Mongolian horse-head fiddle), erhu, and guzheng (Chinese zither), with some pieces creatively blending traditional Chinese music with Western arrangements.

Positioned as a platform to promote traditional Chinese music and popularize refined art forms, the gala has become a signature campus event of the university's graduation season.
