Li Min: Innovating with indigenous 3D microscopes

Li Min, an alumnus who enrolled in 2006 at the School of Optical and Electronic Information at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), has led the development of a domestically produced confocal 3D microscope with nanoprecision detection capabilities. This innovative product, which significantly reduces production costs while enhancing inspection efficiency, has already entered the supply chains of top industry clients.



During his undergraduate studies, Li Min contributed to a small laser-cutting company in Wuhan by designing a 51-MCU-based controller. This experience equipped him with hands-on expertise in market-oriented technical transformations.



After graduation, he helped establish the production line for China's first 8.5-generation liquid crystal display module and led the development-to-mass-production transition of China's first Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) module. After furthering his education at the School of Electronic and Computer Engineering of Peking University, Li Min chose to settle in Optics Valley of China. Using the area’s industry resources, he partnered with Professor Liu Xiaojun from HUST's School of Mechanical Science and Engineering to found Hubei TrueLight 3D Sensing Technology Co (TrueLight) in 2022.



The company employs an entirely self-developed "array optics and confocal imaging" system, utilizing algorithm optimization to reduce reliance on costly precision hardware. Its products support micro- and nano-level testing for semiconductors, PCBs, consumer electronics, and new energy fields.


With outright ownership of the associated intellectual property, the company drives product commercialization while holding over 40 core patents. Recognized as a national high-tech enterprise, TrueLight is valued at 200 million yuan ($27 million).



Li Min's team also clinched first prize at the Optics Valley of China 3551 International Entrepreneurship Competition Global Finals with their "3D microscope based on micro-nano 3D imaging and confocal technology" project on Nov 14, 2025. TrueLight now plans to deepen its collaboration with HUST's School of Optical and Electronic Information on research achievement commercialization and talent cultivation initiatives.
