Yang Chen-Ning: A life dedicated to discovery and education

Oct 20, 2025

The world mourns the passing of Yang Chen-Ning, Nobel Prize-winning physicist, Chinese Academy of Sciences academician, and Tsinghua University professor, who passed away on Oct 18 in Beijing at the age of 103.

Renowned globally for his scientific achievements, Yang had a profound and lasting influence on Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), with a relationship spanning decades.

Yang first visited HUST in June 1995, expressing his admiration for the university’s remarkable development and scientific accomplishments over more than 40 years. He was appointed an honorary professor during a grand ceremony, delivering a speech titled “My Academic Journey and Reflections,” in which he publicly reaffirmed receiving the 1957 Nobel Prize in Physics as a Chinese citizen.

Yang returned to HUST in September 2007, amazed by the campus’ transformation and China’s progress. He encouraged students to recognize the unique opportunities of the era, inspiring them to make significant contributions to the country and society.

During his visits, Yang engaged in discussions with over 30 HUST professors, exchanging ideas across various research fields. On June 10, 1995, he delivered a landmark academic lecture introducing the development of electromagnetism, gauge field theory, and key concepts in modern physics. Alumni recall being personally impacted by his talks.

Yang’s connection with HUST extended beyond lectures and ceremonies. His scholarly philosophy, “better simple than clever, better plain than ornate”, has inspired generations of HUST students and faculty.

Retired physics professor Yang Jianye, author of the comprehensive biography Yang Chen-Ning, expressed disbelief at the sudden news of his passing and highlighted the profound legacy he left behind. First published in 2003 and subsequently expanded and revised, this biography remains the most authoritative account of Yang’s life and achievements.

Yang Chen-Ning’s remarkable scientific contributions, dedication to education, and enduring influence on students and scholars ensure that his legacy will remain alive in the hearts of the global scientific community.
