University of Birmingham delegation visits HUST to deepen collaboration

Jun 4, 2026

A delegation from the University of Birmingham, including Vice Chancellor and Principal Adam Tickell, Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor Jon Frampton, and Karl Dearn, visited Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) on June 2 for a collaborative discussion, which was attended by HUST’s Liu Bo, Chair of the University Committee, and Vice President Zhang Yonghui.

Liu Bo noted that, as leading institutions in China and the UK with rich histories and strong academic strengths, the two universities share aligned educational philosophies and development visions. Building on their existing collaboration, both parties should explore deeper and wider cooperation avenues, integrate their high-quality educational resources and teaching expertise, to nurture more talents with global visions, who are fully equipped to address global challenges.

Tickell reflected on the friendship between the two universities, spanning more than two decades. He noted that their collaboration has grown and further strengthened over the years. A major highlight of their partnership is the Joint Pharmacy Program established in September 2025, where they welcomed its first cohort of students.

He also noted that the visit led to a broad consensus on future directions for cooperation. Tickell expressed his anticipation for further collaboration in areas such as interdisciplinary studies, scientific research, and joint talent cultivation, which will inject fresh impetus into the shared journey of mutual development.

During the collaboration dialogue session, representatives from HUST administrative departments and schools including Office of Undergraduate Education, Office of Development Planning & Discipline Construction, Finance Office, Office of International Affairs, School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, School of Computer Science and Technology, School of Economics, School of Pharmacy from Tongji Medical College, and School of International Education engaged in in-depth discussions with the University of Birmingham delegation on the progress of their cooperation, and explored pathways and directions for future collaborations.

The delegation also visited relevant schools of HUST and had discussions with faculty and student representatives from the Joint Pharmacy Program.
