HUST professors win top award at International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva

Jun 28, 2026

The project "AI-Guided Ultrasound Thermometry for HIFU Therapy" by the team of Professors Zhu Benpeng and Yang Xiaofei from the School of Integrated Circuits at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) was awarded the highest accolade, the Gold with congratulations of the Jury, at the 51st International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva.

The team received the top honor for their innovative achievement, which stood out among more than 1,400 invention projects from 35 countries and regions worldwide.

Dubbed the "Olympics of Inventions", the International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva awards the Gold with congratulations of the Jury to only about 3 percent of competing projects each year. This recognition is selected from all gold medal-winning works and requires unanimous approval from more than 80 international jury members.

The award-winning technology addresses the challenge of monitoring focal zone temperature during clinical high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) procedures. It adopts a multifaceted development approach that combines mechanism, signal, and algorithm research, centered on the principles of acoustic-thermal coupling, multimodal ultrasound signal analysis, and AI reconstruction algorithms.

The team developed a nonlinear mapping model related to acoustic signals and focal zone temperature. This innovation provides a cost-effective, efficient, and non-invasive ultrasound-based thermometry solution.
