Urs von Gunten, Group Leader of the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology and Professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne, was appointed as Advisory Professor at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) during a ceremony on July 1.

HUST Vice President Wen Jinyu acknowledged Urs von Gunten's academic achievements in advanced oxidation processes for drinking water and wastewater treatment, as well as the control of disinfection by-products, emphasizing his profound international influence. Wen Jinyu hoped that by utilizing his academic resources, Urs von Gunten will establish collaborative channels between HUST and leading Swiss research institutions, thereby advancing the internationalization of HUST's research in environmental science and engineering.

Urs von Gunten spoke highly of HUST's academic strengths and innovative atmosphere, expressing a commitment to deepening cooperation in environmental science and engineering through academic exchanges, joint training for young scholars, and international research collaborations.

Xu Xinhua, Vice Dean of the School of Environmental Science and Engineering, provided a detailed introduction to Urs von Gunten's research focus and academic contributions, and expressed hope that he would offer valuable guidance on discipline development, internationalization, and academic influence enhancement. The ceremony was presided over by Sheng Jingbo, Deputy Director of the Office of International Affairs, HUST.

Following the appointment ceremony, Urs von Gunten delivered an academic lecture titled "Oxidation processes for micropollutant abatement: An Eldorado for environmental chemists", engaging in discussions with faculty and students about the efficiency and mechanisms of various chemical oxidation techniques used to remove micropollutants in urban water cycles.
